2018 LASG Summer School on Climate System Model Development and Application Held

Summer school venue

2018 LASG summer school on climate system model development and application was held from July 12-16, 2018 in Beijing. The summer school invited 14 speakers from 6 countries, including Japan, Korea, USA, UK, France and China to deliver themed lectures. More than 200 postgraduate students and young scientists from over 40 universities and institutes attended. 13 students outside Beijing were sponsored to join the event.

Chair of the local organizing committee of the summer school Prof. Anmin Duan from the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) presided over the opening ceremony. Co-chair of the science committee, LASG director Prof. Ziniu Xiao gave opening remarks.

The summer school focused on 3 themes: (1) introduction to climate system model,(2) physical process scheme of climate system model, and (3) application of climate system model in climate variability and climate change research.Co-chair of the science committee, CAS Academician Prof. Guoxiong Wu together with Prof. Yimin Liu introduced the advances in exploring the orography impact on the Asian Monsoon based on numerical modeling. Prof. Bin Wang from LASG/IAPelaborated on design of finite-difference dynamical core for atmospheric model. Prof. Masahiro Watanabe from University of Tokyo made a systematic introduction to weather and climate change attribution studies using GCMs. Prof. Minghua Zhang from State University of New York at Stony Brook & IAP spoke on cloud feedback and relationship with parameterizations of boundary-layer turbulence and shallow convection in atmospheric models. Prof. Guangjun Zhang from Scripps Institution of Oceanography &Tsinghua University talked about the interaction of convection and large-scale circulation and its parameterization in climate and numerical weather prediction models. Prof. Lijuan Li made anintroduction to the grid-point atmospheric model of IAP LASG (GAMIL) and its coupled model FGOALS-g. Prof. Qing Bao reported the development of FGOALS-f2 high-resolution atmospheric circulation model and its application in climate prediction. Prof. June-Yi Lee from Pusan National University lectured on subseasonal climate predictability and prediction.Prof. Tianjun Zhou introduced the uncertainty and the underlying mechanismsin projection of global monsoon changes and analyzed the detection and attribution of climate changes in China. Prof. Laurent Li from National Center for Scientific Research of France reported on climate response to earth greening during the last three decade.Prof. Masaki Sato from University of Tokyo introduced the development and application of global cloud resolving models NICAM. Prof. Hailong Liu introduced the development of climate ocean model in LASG/IAP. Dr. Gianpaolo Balsamo from European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast gave a lecture remotely on a roadmap to earth system modelling that include human influence. All the lectures were well received and attendees had active interaction with experts present. Four attendees gave oral presentation after the lecture session.

Prof. Anmin Duan summarized the event at the closing and presented certificates and awards to 6 excellent trainees.

The summer school was hosted by LASG/IAP, CAS. It provided a good opportunity for students and young scientists to deepen their understanding of climate system model development and application and promote international cooperation in related fields.
