Yinchuan has a temperate continental arid climate. The average annual temperature is 9 ℃. The city enjoys abundant sunshine, 2,800-3,000 hours a year. You are suggested bringing your sun-block, sunglasses and a hat. A big scarf that can cover your head and neck is useful in the desert. Eating more fresh vegetables and fruit will help ease the dryness of the city climate. It is also helpful to take some medicine with you just in case.
The day and night temperature difference can be up to 15 ℃.

Field trip
The field trip on 20th August will take you to West Xia Imperial tombs and Shapotou.
West Xia Kingdom (1038-1227) stands among the once powerful kingdoms, with its capital in Yinchuan shaded by Mt. Helan imperial forests. Its Imperial Tombs reflect the past glories culturally and militarily.
Shapotou, lies on the north bank of the Yellow River where it crosses the southeastern border of the Tengger Desert. Shapotou is regarded as one of the five most beautiful deserts in China, and is widely recognized as the Capital of Sand. Standing on the sand hill, one can see the desert extending to the north, and to the south, a boundless oasis.

Culture notes
Please note that Yinchuan is a multi-nationality city including Han, Hui, Manchu, Mongolian, and Chaoxian peoples. Among them, the Hui people account for 26.3 percent of the total population and they have maintained the traditional folk customs and life style that are unique to other ethnic group. Pork, blood of all the animals, and fierce animals are taboos for Hui people of Yinchuan. Wine, alcohol and tobaccos are not allowed for Muslims, either.
