Dr. Guoxiong Wu was elected the president of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS), one of the seven associations of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). He was elected in the election assembly of IAMAS during the 24th IUGG General Assembly held in Perugia, Italy from 1 to 14 July, 2007.

About 1200 scientists and students from the world attended the IUGG assembly. IUGG is the international organization dedicated to advancing, promoting, and communicating knowledge of the Earth system, its space environment, and the dynamical processes causing change. It was established in 1919 and it has 66 member adhering bodies. China joined IUGG in 1977. IUGG holds General Assemblies at four-year intervals, which are also called the Olympic of earth sciences.

As one of the seven associations of IUGG, IAMAS provides the scientific community with platforms to present, discuss and promote the newest achievements in meteorology, atmospheric science and related fields. It also facilitates and coordinates research which requires international cooperation. IAMAS and its Commissions organise a wide range of scientific meetings that are open to all scientists. In 2005, IAMAS scientific assembly was held in Beijing, China. It was the first time IAMAS held its assembly in a developing country. The local organizing committee chaired by Academician Guoxiong Wu organized this assembly with great success, highly complimented by the scientists from the world.

Academician Wu is mainly engaged in weather dynamics, climate dynamics and atmospheric general circulation. He is also the Officer of the Joint Science Committee (JSC) of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP), and one of the leading scientists of the National Key Basic Research and Development Plan (973) "Ocean-Atmosphere Interaction over the Joining Area of Asia and Indian-Pacific Ocean (AIPO) and Its Impact on the Short-Term Climate Variation in China".

Academician Wu had been the deputy president of IAMAS since 2003. He is the first Asian president in the over-70 year history of IAMAS. Dr. Jagadish Shuklathe, the winner of 52nd IMO Prize in 2007, sent his greeting and congratulations, "This is a great honor which you richly deserve because of your life-time of major contributions to meteorology, climate and especially monsoons."
