The 5th Asian Monsoon Years (AMY 2007-2012) Workshop was held on 24-25, 2008 in Beijing, China during the 4th WMO International Workshop on Monsoons held in Beijing from 20 to 25, October. More than 40 scientists attended the 5th AMY workshop.
The objective of the workshop was to review the accomplishments of AMY summer field experiments in 2008 and discuss the implementation of summer monsoon experiments in 2009, the plans for winter monsoon experiments, and data management issues. The workshop was also joined by Asian –Australian Monsoon Panel (AAMP) to discuss the development of AMY coordinated modeling tasks including coordinated hindcast experiments for Monsoon intraseasonal prediction and its impact on seasonal forecast.
In general, the observations have been successfully conducted by the observation working group (WG1) and WG1 also developed a webpage and a BBS forum. SSC strongly recommended each WG to follow the example and develop its own webpage. All the WG WebPages will be linked to the AMY official website.
On the second day of the workshop, the experiment design for numerical modeling was discussed and AMY implementation plan was revised. The closer interaction between data group and modeling group was encouraged. In addition, AMY IPO reviewed the project office’s work in the past year and reported recent activities, including designing a few items of AMY souvenirs.
The 6th AMY workshop will be held in March or early April, 2009 in Pune, India.
