The 5th University Allied Workshop was held in Chiba, Japan

The fifth University Allied Workshop (UAW-2008) was held from 1-3 July in Chiba, Japan. The theme of the workshop is “climate and environmental studies for global sustainability”. About 90 delegates from the relevant universities and institutes in Beijing, Nanjing, Taipei, Tokyo, Seoul, and Washington attended the workshop. These delegates are mainly engaged in the studies of climate model development, assessment and application. About 65% of the delegates are PhD candidates and young researchers who just received their PhD degree.

The director of LASG/IAP, Dr. Bin Wang, is the member of the organizing committee and the coordinator of mainland. He organized 20 faculty and students from IAP and Nanjing University to attend the workshop. Among them, there are four IAP scientists, Academician Mu Mu, Dr. Guangyu Shi, Dr. Bin Wang, and Dr. Tianjun Zhou and 8 PhD and PhD candidates.

The aim of UAW is to encourage cooperative research and graduate student education among university groups carrying climate modeling and analysis in East Asia , which in turn will promote the creation of a human-network and contribute to the development of the next generation of scientists in the field of climate and environmental studies. It’s the fifth time UAW has been held. The last time it was hosted by LASG/IAP in Beijing . The active communication among students in that workshop was maintained in the workshop this year. Students had warm discussion on numerical modeling, aerosol-cloud-radiation and data analysis. Student representatives report their discussion results on the last day of the workshop. IAP students had made good preparation before the workshop and some of the presentations were especially praised by the workshop coordinators.

Academician Mu Mu gave an invited plenary presentation on” Some new progresses in the applications of conditional nonlinear optimal perturbations”. Student representatives Mr. Jiandong Li and Ms. Juan Zhao gave a plenary report on Wenchuan earthquake and other recent Asian extreme weather events—Chinese Students' reflection”.

The workshop was held after earthquakes in Sichuan China and in north of Japan. Prof. Teruyuki Nakajima, the director of CCSR, Tokyo University , who is also the host of the workshop, called for 1 minute mourning for the dead in the earthquakes at the opening ceremony.
