Introduction
WaterNet is an award that originated from a "Solutions Network" proposal in the Decision Support through Earth Science Results Program. WaterNet is a new international network of researchers, stakeholders, and end-users of remote sensing tools that benefits the water resources management community. The project co-investigators on the WaterNet team analyzed the geo-science questions and required forecasting capabilities arising in a particular decision support area. They assessed the current options, datasets, and systems in place and used as decision support tools and diagnosed the options of improving these systems by using NASA observations from space, data assimilation and numerical modeling tools. The team identified multiple opportunities, where NASA water research results could potentially improve operational decision-making processes, but in many occurrences, was limited to the diagnosis of the state-of-the-art solution and a proposed candidate solution. Several demonstration projects were initiated as prototype developments. The project team described their networking and solutions approach at a variety of venues in the USA and abroad, where the solutions approach found a lot of resonance.
