North American Summer Monsoon Index (NASMI)
The North American summer monsoon index (NASMI) is defined as an area-averaged seasonally (JAS) dynamical normalized seasonality (DNS) at 700 hPa within the North American monsoon domain (17.5°-35°N, 100°-120°W) (Li and Zeng, 2002, 2003, 2005).
The North American Summer Monsoon Index (NASMI)
The normalized time series of NASMI (1948-2010).
The summer here is JAS. The thick solid lines indicate 9-year Gaussian-type filtered values.

Correlation between precipitation and the NASMI (shading) and regression of 850-mb winds against the monsoon index (vectors) for July, August and September from 1979 to 2006, respectively. The shaded areas and vectors indicate significant at the 95% confidence level.
