报告摘要:
The Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays an important role in producing Asian summer and winter monsoons, and even forming the huge warm water pool of the tropical western Pacific. In this lecture, I show the water vapor transport associated with this 10-20 day (or quasi-biweekly) intraseasonal variability is essential toward the Tibetan Plateau which enhances the precipitation and circulation anomalies particularly over the southeast part of the Plateau, which in turn interact with the mid-latitude westerly regime and induce circulation anomalies, affecting the Meiyu-Baiu frontal activity of this time scale. It should be noted that under the ongoing global warming situation, these tropical-extratropical interaction and hydro-meteorological circulations over and around TP will be largely affected both by changes of the atmosphere-ocean interaction in the tropical Asian monsoon region, and those of land-cryosphere-atmosphere interaction over the northern Eurasia and around TP, including the Arctic region. This lecture particularly focuses on these processes of the tropical-extratropical interactions to show how the atmosphere-ocean processes and atmosphere-land processes will be integrated over and around TP to produce changes of the Asian monsoon climate.

He served as assistant professor of Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University, lecturer and associate professor (1982-1991) and full professor (1992-2002) at the Institute of Geoscience, University of Tsukuba, and full professor (2002-2013) at Hydrospheric-Atmospheric Research Center of Nagoya University. He also conducted two COE (Center Of Excellence) Programs of the MEXT as a leader. He was also Distinguished Professor of the Research Institute for Advanced Studies of Nagoya University.  He concurrently served as Program Director (for Hydrological cycle research) of the Frontier Research Program of JAMSTEC (1997~2009). In 2013 through 2021, he served as Director General of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN). Since 2022 onward, he serves as director of Kyoto Climate Change Adaptation Center. His research spans over 4 decades covering a wide range of topics in climate dynamics, including monsoons, land-atmosphere-ocean interactions, biosphere and climate. Over the years, he devoted several international research programs as scientific committee members including GEWEX, WCRP and the Future Earth. He conducted GEWEX Asian Monsoon Experiment (GAME) (1996-2002) as a scientific leader. He was awarded several prizes including Gulbenkian Prize for Humanity.
