报告摘要:
Atmospheric blocking patterns (blocking) are persistent, quasi-stationary, and quasi-barotropic high-pressure systems in mid-high latitudes, deviating and slowing down the usual course of migratory troughs and ridges for days to weeks, causing heat waves, wildfires, droughts, flooding, and cold waves in situ, up- and downstream. This presentation summarizes three research aspects of blocking in terms of transient-mean flow interaction: 1) different statistics by various detection approaches; 2) simulation biases and contributions by mean-flow components in GCMs developed at GFDL; and 3) persistent impact of transient-mean flow interaction on record-breaking Canadian wildfires in 2023.
