2020 marks the 35th anniversary of the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG). Celebration of LASG's 35th birthday is held along with 2020 annual meeting at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing, China from December 24 to 25, 2020.
LASG deputy director Prof. XIE Zhenghui chaired the opening ceremony. LASG was established in 1985. The meeting started with a brief celebration to commemorate this special occasion.
Dr. DUAN Xiaonan, CAS Earth Science Division Chief of the Bureau of Frontier Sciences &Education, CAS Academician Prof. WANG Huijun from the Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology and Prof. CAO Junji IAP Director General gave congratulatory remarks.
CAO complimented on CAS Academician Prof. ZENG Qingcun's vision for numerical modelling and founding of LASG lab thirty-five years ago. "With joint efforts of LASG members over the years, LASG has been rated Top-ranking State Key Laboratory in seven consecutive national assessments. We have reasons to believe it will play an even bigger role in atmospheric science development and satisfy the national scientific needs," said Prof. CAO. CAS Academician Prof. LI Chongyin looked back on the early times in the lab’s establishment and he read a poem composed by himself to encouraged LASG member to carry on good traditions and make new contributions to the country.
Several top overseas experts sent congratulation videos. They recalled their visiting and working experiences in LASG, congratulated on its 35th anniversary and expressed wishes for future collaboration.
LASG director Prof. XIAO Ziniu gave an annual work report. Despite the impact of COVID-19 in 2020, LASG made major advances in project application, scientific output, application of scientific results and science communication. He also introduced plans for 2021, which include centering on the state laboratory reform situation, strengthening research planning and being orientated to national science demand etc.
Experts home and abroad contributed 32 oral talks, of which 26 were invited and 38 posters. The talks covered a wide range of topics in atmospheric science and trans-disciplines research ranging from classic ENSO to up-to-date machine learning and big data.
In addition, the Third LASG Postgraduate Forum and LASG Open Research Program Workshop were held on December 23. 39 students made oral talks and posters at the forum. Each program PI reported on his work in 2020. Panel reviewed the implantation of each program and proposed on future work.
More than 300 researchers and students from relevant institutes, universities and computing companies attended the meeting on-site. Over 600 participated in the meeting online.
