The Annual Meeting and the 19th Climate System Model Symposium of the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modelling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), was held in Beijing from December 8 to10, 2021.

LASG deputy director Prof. XIE Zhenghui presided over the opening ceremony. LASG director Prof. XIAO Ziniu gave an annual work report. He outlined LASG major advances in the past year and introduced work plan in the next year. In 2021, LASG achieved impressive progress in project application, research output and talent cultivation. Despite the pandemic, academic exchange continued to be active throughout the year. In 2022, LASG will be oriented to the State key laboratory reform situation and strive to bring the laboratory development to a new high.

The scientific program consisted of 65 oral talks, of which 37 were invited, which centered around global climate change, climate dynamics, Earth system model development, attribution of climate anomalies and extreme climate events, predictability and prediction methods. Research results of a wide range of topics were presented including the warming and wetting trend in Northwest China, potential vorticity perspective of the Genesis of a Tibetan Plateau Vortex, land surface model in Earth System, water vapor transport and aerosol-cloud interaction in the Tibetan Plateau, extreme El Niño mechanism and impact, stratospheric polar vortices and extreme cold weather in the northern hemisphere, the collaborative path of carbon neutrality and clean air in China, deep learning and big data analysis. These talks brought not only up-to-date reports on frontier research questions in atmospheric science, but also involved the latest national science policy and the application of new technology. Great interest was aroused among attendees and active online interaction followed.

The third day on December 10, the 19th LASG Climate System Model Symposium was held. LASG climate, ocean and land surface model researchers reported advances in each field and had in-depth exchange with model development groups from at home and abroad.

Over one thousand researchers and students joined the online meeting and watched the live.

In addition, the Fourth LASG Postgraduate Forum and the LASG Open Research Program Symposium were held online respectively on December 6. 29 oral talks and 9 posters were presented at the forum. Each open research program undertaker reported his work in the last year. LASG panel reviewed the implantation and proposed on future work.
